Buying a used motorhome is exciting, but a careful look before you commit can save a great deal of cost and disappointment. This guide walks through the main areas to check.

Paperwork and history

Start with the documents. They tell you how the motorhome has been looked after.

  • V5C registration document matching the vehicle

  • Service history for the base vehicle

  • Habitation check records

  • Current MOT and any advisories

Damp

Damp is one of the most expensive problems to put right in a motorhome.

Tip: ask whether a recent damp test has been carried out and request the readings.

Look for soft spots in floors and walls, staining around windows and roof lights, and a musty smell.

The base vehicle

  1. Check the tyres, including their age as well as tread depth.

  2. Look underneath for corrosion.

  3. Take a test drive and listen for knocks or clutch slip.

The habitation area

Test every appliance: fridge on all power sources, hob, oven, heating, hot water, water pump and toilet.
